In the Byzantine time, it was called ^Papadonisia^referring to the monasteries built on some of the Princes' Islands. The islands began to be known due to the emperors', empresses' and patriarchs exiled to these monasteries.

This island is known as ^Megale^or ^Grand (Büyük in Turkish) was named ^Prinkipo-Princes' Island^after the settlement of the emperor on the island, and afterward, all the archipelagoes began to be called ^Prinkiponisos-Princes' Islands. ^Büyükada joined in the Ottoman territories ahead of the conquest of Istanbul, has been home to a multi-faith population and tradition since that period.
